Dr. Peace K. Amoatey is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Engineering, School of Engineering Sciences, University of Ghana, Legon. Her academic background is BSc. in Civil Engineering from KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana, MSc in Resources Engineering (Water & Land Resources) from the Universitaet Karlsruhe (TH) now KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany and PhD in Civil Engineering from the Universitaet Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany.
Her research interests in the last 10 years has been on investigating leakage management in Ghana’s urban water supply network with focus on leakage estimation and detection modeling. Among her achievements is the modification of a standard methodology for estimating leakage in water networks (the minimum night flow method) to make it applicable to developing country water networks. She also developed an inverse optimization model for the detection of leakage in water networks.
Prior to her leakage management, she investigated issues around Solid Waste Management and its impact on Public health specifically, Malaria. She sought to establish whether the disposal method one uses correlates with the incidences of malaria in a year. She is still investigating this relationship as a pet project. For the purposes of student’s supervision, she has carved a niche around improving wastewater for irrigation by altering the sand bed filter characteristics.
She is looking for collaborators who will help to study water loss management in Sub-Saharan African water systems towards reduction of non-revenue water and the number of people without access to safe water.
Since she joined the University of Ghana in 2007, she has taught courses like Water Resources Management, Fluid Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Rural Engineering, Advanced Water Resources Management, Advanced Soil Mechanics as well as general courses like Statistics for Engineers and Technical Report Writing.
She is a member of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), the International Water Association (IWA), Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and the International Water Association (IWA). She is a mentor to many youths and students. Peace enjoys traveling, singing, cooking for her family and friends.
