All About the Ghana Young Academy
Background
The Ghana Young Academy (GhYA) grew out of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences as its youth wing with support from the Royal Society and Pfizer. It was officially launched in 2014 with three founding members. The GhYA was proposed to help strengthen collaboration between scientists (young and senior) in Ghana. Contemporary scientific challenges often benefit from collaborations of this nature. The GhYA identifies and brings together talented young scientists to create the opportunity for better solutions to national and international challenges. The GhYA represents the voice of scientists on national and international issues. It encourages debate and discussion.
Goals of the GhYA
- To give a voice to young scientists in Ghana
- To promote science, technology, innovation and mathematics as career options for young Ghanaians
- To promote the building of capacity for science research
- To encourage the development of novel approaches to problems of national and international signification
- To foster collaborations between Ghanaian scientists and the growing global network of NYAs
Membership
The GhYA currently comprises 24 members who have been elected into the Academy for a five-year term after which they become alumni. Members are drawn from outstanding early to mid-career scientists form various fields. The GhYA is associated with the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Global Young Academy.
Leadership
The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the GhYA and is made up of all 24 members. The Academy is also led by the Executive Committee, made up of Co-Chairs and Executive Committee Members.
